Founding the Business
Myers Industries started as a family
business in 1933. Brothers Louis and Meyer Myers saw an
opportunity to supply service products to the tire repair and retreading industry. They
formed a partnership with a $620 loan and a used pick-up truck to create Myers Tire
Supply, and they opened their first store in Akron, Ohio to sell tire repair tools and
service supplies to tire dealers. After reading the summary below, learn more of our
history with operational and financial milestones at the Myers
Timeline.
Growth of Distribution
Over the years, the original Myers Tire Supply business
expanded with branches all across the U.S, plus international locations. Today, with
43 strategically positioned branches, a broad product offering, and rapid availability, we
hold the leadership position as the One - Stop - Shop for the tire dealer.
Establishing
Manufacturing
In 1946, the Myers brothers began two
manufacturing companies: Patch Rubber, to produce tire repair patches, and Akro-Mils, to
sell plastic and metal storage products through the Myers Tire Supply catalog. Throughout
the years, manufacturing operations expanded as we developed new products such as plastic
storage bins, plastic flower planters, tire repair items, and custom calendered rubber.
Acquisitions
& Divestitures Help Drive Growth
While internal growth is a
fundamental part of our expansion, acquisitions also play an important role in our growth.
Since 1987, acquisitions in the company's manufacturing segments have allowed us to:
quickly expand key product lines,
gain new customers and markets, and
add complementary manufacturing processes
Acquisitions are logical extensions of our original plastic and rubber products. We do not
target acquisitions, but rather evaluate and act on opportunities as they arise. Our
acquisition efforts are geared toward advancing our market positions by strengthening our
value as a single source for customers. At the same time, the company evaluates all segments and brands against its long-term growth strategy and whether or not potential divestment is the best catalyst for re-investing in core brands and segments.
